FOOTHILL CENTURY BIKE RIDE
Our 4th annual Foothill Century Bike Ride was hot, hot, hot in three ways – the weather, the vistas and the food.  This year’s bike ride was a huge success despite the 100 degree temperature. The weather didn’t stop the more than 400 adults and children who participated in the bike ride and the 100 volunteers who helped before, during and after the race.

According to the evaluation forms that the riders filled out, our friendly volunteers greeted them from the registration, through the rest stops and as they crossed the finish line. One rider commented, “There were nice energetic volunteers. The ‘woo-hoo’ as I pulled in at the end was a pleasant, unexpected surprise.” Needless to say the SPHDS community’s friendly feeling was felt throughout the day."

Many cyclists found the scenery beautiful and in spite of the heat it was very relaxing, would you believe!

Following the ride we had a special treat at the BBQ which everyone enjoyed, in addition to the BBQd chicken and frankfurters, everyone enjoyed the fantastic burgers donated by Golden West Glatt Cattle Company…people are still talking about them saying, “they are the best glatt kosher hot dogs ever.”

This year’s success can be attributed to many dedicated people on the Foothill Committee and with their wisdom the event would not have been the same. Farshad Zaghi, Yvonne Boxerman, Miri Levy, the Spielmans, Scott Penner, Lee and Susan Gavens, Andy and Joelle Pluemer, Barbara Goldstein, Nancy and David Kulka, Rabbi and Rena Schochet. Sherry Solden was all over the campus and went all over the route to deliver items and help at rest stops. We had many high school students from local schools who welcomed the riders in the morning and upon their return. For those who rode the 10K Family Fun Ride, Our talented Rachel Flores and Shannon McGovern greeted, and Mr. and Mrs. Oppenheimer had snacks ready at the juice break.

Special thanks to Katie Wampler, Michael Avrukin, and the Geller Family who kept the Woodside High School rest stop hopping so early in the morning. Elaine Chau, Ed Baker, and Isaac Klughaupt kept lunch rolling at the Ralston Park and Ride. Bryan Taback, Gili Guri Mill, and Alan Crystal kept the Windy Hill rest stop stocked and ready for hungry riders on their way back to the BBQ. Many thanks to our friendly staff at the rest stops who helped keep our riders full, hydrated, and cool.

Etti Tassa, Tammy Bublil, Naomi Klughaupt and Melissa Lee were all on kitchen duty making the delicious food for the BBQ. Thank you to Meni Peretz and David LeVine for manning the grill during the extreme weather conditions.

We also would like to thank everyone who volunteered throughout the week before the event and the day of, your hard work made the Foothill possible! Lastly, we would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors whose contributions and support brought new and past riders back to our event.

We hope to see everyone back at the Foothill next year. Rumor says that next year’s ride will include a 100 mile route…start training now!

This event would not have been the event it was without the dedication of Lisa Sobel who kept everything together. Thank you for all that you did, you kept your “cool” and it was a great event!

36 FABULOUS YEARS!
MAZEL TOV SPHDS!

It was only three dozen years ago when a homeless school was established…and it is now housed on four plus acres with a multi-national student body. Much has changed, much has diversified, much has grown and much will continue to transform and develop. All this vitality is part of an educational institution whose initial vision has been reached and is continuing newer heights – this is 36 year old South Peninsula Hebrew Day.

To celebrate this special time in SPHDS’ history the school marked this anniversary with a gala dinner honoring the school’s founders: David and Patricia Bergman, Martin and Naomi Klughaupt, Judith and Israel Krongold, Stan and Stephanie (z’l) Sussman and Judy and Marshall Wallach. Also honored was Barbara Spielman for her thirty years of dedicated service to the school.

It was an exceptional evening; the venue was outstanding - the San Jose City Hall Rotunda; the food was delicious; the words spoken were meaningful and touching; and the 8th grade students were terrific.

The creativity that was put into the planning and the execution of the dinner was amazing. Yishar Koach to the following people for this wonderful evening: Yaffa Borison who made it happen; Sharon Dwek, SPHDS Development Director; Marcie Shapiro, video director; Christine Tachner, tribute book designer; and Lisa Sobel.

To the 36th anniversary committee, Todah Rabah: Honorary Co-Chairs – Paul and Sheri Robbins and Lee and Susan Gavens; Event Co-Chairs: Nancy Gofman and Esther Rosenfeld and the Planning Committee: Wendy Allyn, Jackie Bocian, Elana Feinsmith, Adele Gershater, Deena Goldfeld, Nissa Johanix, Miriam Klughaupt, Amanda Orrin, Arthur Rabinowitz, Miri Rivlin, Rena Schochet, Erika Shapiro, Karni Shir, Devorah Soncino, Susie Spielman, Bette Sussman, Etti Tassa, Ilanit Wilnai and Naomi Zamir.

It was a celebration to remember – thank you to everyone for making it so memorable.

This year’s Israel in the Gardens will be held Sunday, June 7th, from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. The Main Entrance is on Mission Street between 3rd and 4th streets.

SPHDS will have a booth, #27, near the Main Stage area, so come by and say “shalom.”

OLD MACDONALD HAD A FARM...
Dubim room children and their families had a fantastic, fun field trip last Sunday to the Emma Prusch Farm Park in San Jose. The children explored the farm and its variety of animals e.g., cows, pigs and sheep and they were able to feed the chickens, ducks and even the goats. It was amusing to see the chickens and roosters running wild and free. Some of the children even collected feathers as keepsakes. This was followed by a picnic at the adjacent park where the children ran and played together in the playground area. It was a wonderfully educational and fun day in the park!

TORAH FAIR

CHAVERIM LOVE SHAVUOT
The children in Chaverim, (Gan Aviv, room 6), had a great time celebratiing Shavuot. After hearing stories about Shavuot, each child decorated a tablet with his or her own version of The Ten Commandments. Most of the students remembered many of the traditional commandments: Celebrate Shabbat, Love Mommy and Daddy, Pray to Only Hashem. Then, the rules became very personal e.g., "don't hit or spit!" and "don't take toys without asking!"

For their Shabbat snack, they made edible tablets which had delicious cream cheese frosting that the children helped make. It became the "glue" that held the two tablets together and they made the candy flowers stick; not only was it yummy it looked great, too! Other art activities included making beautiful baskets for their first fruits by lacing silk flowers through colorful pipe cleaners and adding colorful beads.

On the day before Shavuot, each child wore white, sang and danced to many traditional Shavuot songs wearing their floral head bands created with real flowers by Morah Nurit, and during creative movement with Morah Rachel, they carried tambourines (as pretend baskets) while dancing and singing. Chaverim joined the other two pre-k classes, Arnavot and Parparim, for singing and storytelling. They ended their great celebration outdoors by enjoying special ice cream sandwich treats provided by our school. They certainly know how to celebrate Shavuot!
