SPHDS AWARDED CERTIFICATE OF MERIT IN MATH COMPETITION
On November 18, 2008, our pre-Algebra and Algebra students participated in the annual American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8). The students were challenged with mathematics that is new, different and out of the box. Congratulations to our school winners:
Aaron Pluemer – 1st place and honor roll
Omer Hazon – 2nd place
Nadav Epstein – 3rd place and Merit
This year the combined score of our top three students our school was awarded a certificate of merit.
We hope that by participating in this contest some of our students will be inspired to learn more mathematics! A special thank you to Miri Levy our middle school math teacher for all the encouragement and time she devotes to our students.
SPHDS STUDENTS BRING SHABBAT AND CHANUKAH TO THE RESIDENTS OF BELMONT VILLAGE
On Friday, December 12, through the HeartAction program, SPHDS students in grades 6 and 2 visited Belmont Village to have Kabbalat Shabbat with the Jewish residents. Chanie Lapin led the service and the second grade students from her Judaic Studies class presented songs for Hanukkah. A slideshow was presented by our development director, Sharon Dwek, to the seniors so they could learn about the program and the activities in our school. This led nicely into the next activity in which the 6th grade students interviewed the seniors about their school days. The students wrote down the seniors’ memories and the interviews will be edited and sent to the seniors and their families. A special connection was made between the students and the seniors, as well as a bridge between generations. This special relationship between our 6th grade students and the residents of Belmont Village is now in its second year.

DRAMA AT SPHDS
A captive audience of SPHDS students gathered in the MPR for the much anticipated drama productions. Ms. Braunstein’s seventh grade and fifth grade classes have been preparing for weeks to perform their first plays of the year. The young thespians presented “The Emperors New Clothes” and “The Trial of Hansel and Gretal.” The plays were a great success. Reviews from fellow students included, “The plays were really fun. I liked seeing my brothers in it.” “Almost everyone knew their lines.” “I liked the part when Ilan said, ‘The whole truth, and nothing but the truth.’ It was funny.”

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Thank you to our wonderful board and volunteers who gathered together on Sunday night and called our community members and parents. Their efforts yielded $6,000 in less than two hours. Thank you for the support of our parent community in getting us closer to achieving our goal of $100,000 and 100% participation.
If you have given your annual gift or made your pledge to the school we thank you. If you are affiliated with a corporation that has a matching gift program, please make your gift go even further by filling out the forms provided by your company. Please note that many companies are reviewing their matching gifts policies in 2009 so we encourage you to close your gifts by the end of the year. Without your help, we can not develop this wonderful opportunity to further support our school.
We are able to accept online donations through December 31st at www.sphds.org. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact our Development Director, Sharon Dwek, sharon.dwek@sphds.org.
