KINDERGARTEN OPEN HOUSE/ICE CREAM SOCIAL
This Sunday afternoon, October 28th, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., the school will have its Kindergarten Open House/Ice Cream Social for families who have children entering Kindergarten in September 2008.
Our kindergarten is not only open to students from Gan Aviv but to the entire community. We encourage school parents to extend an invitation to others who have children of the appropriate age.
This is the opportunity to learn about our exceptional Kindergarten program; meet the teachers who lead this dynamic introduction to learning; and experience a “hands-on” presentation of the integrated curriculum that SPHDS offers – including science, math, Hebrew, music and Jewish Studies.  Parents will also tour the campus visiting the library and the Benhamou Computer Center.
Socialize with other prospective parents who are looking for excellence in education for their children and enjoy ice cream desserts.

HALLOWEEN
This can be a particularly difficult time for many parents. This highly commercialized event is one that has its roots in pagan/Christian Europe and for some strange reason has taken root in the United States .  Although some have tried to compare it to Thanksgiving, an American tradition, its source "trick or treat" is in fact extortion and  one that is certainly the antithesis of anything Jewish.
For the past number of years we have held a pizza and movie night at school so that parents would have an alternative for their children - instead of wandering the streets seeking handouts of candy from strangers, their children would be able to enjoy a movie and pizza night.  There are undoubtedly other more authentic American values that we can transmit to our children rather than Halloween.
Hollowbean night, our pizza and movie evening, will take place on Wednesday evening, October 31st, at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR.  The cost of the pizza, drink and movie is $2.50.

UN ASADO ARGENTINO KOSHER MARAVILLOSO
The lack of a kosher meat restaurant is felt by all sections of the community.  "Eating out" is something that we all like to do and not having anywhere to go doesn't help.  So, SPHDS comes to the rescue with our new event, Restaurant Night Out, on Sunday evening, November 11th at 6:30 p.m. in the MPR.
Our first Restaurant Night Out will feature Un Asado Argentino Kosher Marvilloso, an Argentinian BBQ.  A great dinner including hors d'oeuvres, entree - BBQ grill, dessert, and wine will be served, all for just $36 per person.
This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy good food and pleasant company.  This event is open to the community and word of mouth is already out.  Please make your reservations early and plan ahead for your babysitter. RSVP to Sharon Dwek:  sharon.dwek@sphds.org by Thursday, November 8th.
To be a sous chef or help decorate the MPR, please contact Chanie Lapin at:  teacherchanie@yahoo.com. Proceeds from the dinner will go towards our eighth grade's graduation trip to Israel.

BOX-TOPS WANTED
Remember to cut out box-tops and bring them to the school office; there is a labeled box to put them in.  By participating, SPHDS will enrich our children’s education…each one of us makes a difference.
For more information or for a list of participating products – including Cheerio’s, Ziploc bags, Kleenex, and Gold Medal flour visit: boxtops4education.com.

PARENTS' ASSOCIATION NEWS
Board Meeting
The next Parents’ Association board meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 30th at 8:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.   Please note that Parents’ Association meetings take place in the mornings.

Fundraisers
The Sally Foster gift wrap and David’s Cookie Dough fundraisers are underway.  Please review the brochures that were sent home and return your orders by Wednesday, November 7th.

Your support of these two fundraisers will help the Parents’ Association continue providing the students with holiday treats, our weekly Tuesday morning coffees, and provide additional programming.

Tuesday Morning Coffees
Special thanks to Joelle Pluemer who brought bagels, cream cheese and fruit for all to enjoy at this week’s coffee.
We need volunteers to share the job of picking up bagels either from Izzy’s in Palo Alto or Izzy’s in Sunnyvale .  It will be easy if parents alternate pick-ups and then submit the bill for reimbursement.
Please contact Holly Mendel at 408 245-3144 or email:  Holly@TheMendels.org
