NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT SPHDS
The fact that we are looking at a considerable increase in enrollment for next year is no way related to our recent accreditation or the outstanding college acceptances by our graduates of the Class of 2003.

We always give our parents priority but that priority enrollment period has long since passed.  We are quickly reaching maximum capacity at all grade levels from Room 1 in preschool through Grade 3 in the elementary school.

We are faced with a similar situation with regard to applications for tuition assistance.  While the school feels very strongly that every Jewish child should receive a Jewish education, financial aid is a line item in the budget and eventually the dollars run out.  Parents who have not yet done so are asked to please hand in their applications to Nancy Kulka, in the business office.

Our sizeable enrollment has been augmented by a new development.  Eitz Chaim Academy is joining forces with SPHDS.  Eitz Chaim has been in the San Jose area for the past twelve years and has filled a need in the community.  As we have grown and expanded in all areas, it has become clear to both administrations that everyone would gain from being one educational institution.  We are therefore very happy to be joining forces and see this as a very positive step.  We are looking at an increase of twenty students over and above our original estimate.  This means an average of two students per grade.

We are confident that our parents and students will reach out to all our new families and welcome them in the warm and caring way that our SPHDS families are renowned for.

SHABBATON
As part of this welcoming introduction Rabbi and Mrs. Greenberg recently held a middle school Shabbaton, at their Palo Alto home, for both SPHDS and Eitz Chaim Academy girls.

We are very fortunate and grateful to Project Seed, in New York, for sending senior counselors to assist with the Shabbaton programming.  The food was delicious, spirits were high, and the schmoozing went on into the wee hours of the morning.  But most importantly, the girls discovered that it made no difference which school they were from.  Girls are girls, they share common interests and have similar aspirations…and everyone is looking forward to next year.

We are fortunate to have so many faculty members, like the Greenbergs, who go the extra mile for our students.  Our thanks to them and to all their neighbors who hosted the girls.

We now look forward to a boys’ Shabbaton in June, in San Jose, organized by Rabbi and Mrs. Greenberg for both the ECA and SPHDS middle school students.

IZZY’S NOW OPEN IN SUNNYVALE
We all know where to get bagels, cream cheese and pizza – Izzy’s Bagels in Palo Alto.  Now there is a sister store in Sunnyvale where one can get strictly kosher deli and salads – Izzy’s Brooklyn Deli.
It is a brand new full service kosher deli.  Enjoy the delights of a kosher deli located in the Hacienda Shopping Center, 783 E. El Camino, Sunnyvale (El Camino near Wolfe Road).
Remember the phrase about a baseball field in the movie, Field of Dreams, “if they build it we will come”…well…they finally opened a kosher deli and we will come!

MAKE LIFE EASIER…ORGANIZE WITH LABELS
Now that your spring cleaning is over, it's time to get organized!
SPHDS and Gan Aviv are partnering with Mabel's Labels to help make it easier to keep your house in order and make sure children's clothes and other personal items make it back home. Our paperless fundraiser will be open for online shopping. They offer personalized and incredibly long-lasting labels for fabric, plastic, shoes, bags and more, including terrific Kashrut labels for the home.
Whether it's food allergies, going to camp, traveling, household organizing – there are labels to meet all kinds of needs. These labels are high-quality and make great gifts.  A generous percentage of any order goes to support Gan Aviv programming, so please log on to the customized website at www.sphds.mabel.ca.  Also, please note that the Kashrut labels are only available by phone, don't forget to mention SPHDS when calling!
Please forward this link to any friends or family members who might be interested. Questions? Contact Gan Aviv parent Christine Tachner at ctachner@gmail.com or call at 650-964-7905. Thanks for supporting SPHDS, and happy organizing!
