LAG B’OMER
This year Lag B’Omer falls on Sunday. We at SPHDS would not let Steve off the hook and we will be celebrating with our traditional field day on Monday, from 12:30 p.m.
For the children’s safety and comfort they should bring water bottles, hats, suntan lotion, and suitable footwear for outdoor activities.

ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS
The year’s essay contest topic was “What person of importance to the Jewish people, past or present, would you like to meet and why?” The subjects of the essays ran the entire gamete of Jewish History from Maimonides to Jabotinsky, from Rabin to Yehuda Halevi, and Marc Chagall to Senator Lieberman. Certainly no one can deny that our student body is highly diversified in its role models.

The following are the winners and their famous subjects:
5th grade – 1st place:  Leah LeVine/Eli Cohen
                   2nd place:  Joshua Applebaum/Marc Chagall
6th grade -  1st place:  Sara Cramer/Eli Cohen
                   2nd place:  Gabriel Haines/Theodor Herzl
7th grade -  1st place:  Hershel Ravkin/Simon Wiesenthal
                   2nd place:  Avi Rosenfeld/Rashi
8th grade -  1st place:  Aliza Landes/Chana Senesh
                   2nd place:  Erez Cramer/Ze’ev Jabotinsky

Each 1st place winner won $50 and each 2nd place winner won $25.  Once again, our sincere thanks to the Parents Association for organizing the essay contest.  Our deepest appreciation to the judges for their time.

ERB TESTING
Each year we administer the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) tests to students from grades 3 – 8. Students who are not fluent in English will not be given these tests.
These tests will be administered during a 5 day period beginning Tuesday, May 8th and concluding on Monday, May 14th, between morning recess and lunch. PLEASE DO NOT SCHEDULE any appointments during the testing time.
These tests are not used to judge an individual student’s performance in a given subject. They are intended to assist the school in auditing curricular process, over a number of years.  It also provides the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), who mandates this test, with evidence that students in independent schools – as a group – score as high or higher as their public school counterparts.
While the results of these tests are not part of a student’s report card grades, they do become part of their permanent record. It is important that all students understand that these tests are not to be taken lightly.
There is no studying for these tests. Our General Studies teachers will prepare our students during the next few weeks with pre-tests to familiarize them with this kind of test. This is especially helpful for the younger students. Please ensure that your children have a good night’s rest and are on time for school during the testing period.

MARINE FIELD TRIP
The middle school students’ field trip to the Marine Science Institute on San Francisco Bay, in Redwood City, this week, was fascinating.
After being divided into three groups by their science teacher, Mr. Kulka, the students rotated among four stations, each of which covered a certain aspect of marine science. The students collected and saw organisms as small as the microscopic plankton to 3 foot striped bass.

They began with a collection of plankton, the microscopic organisms found in our bay waters.  Later the group collected a small portion of the muddy bay bottom to study the smaller invertebrate animals, such as mussels, clams, and worms. At the third station, the students identified small specimens of bay fish, some of which they had earlier collected in a large net. For the last station, the classes learned about sharks and some of the larger fish found in the bay and even had a chance to pet a shark; it was rather small.
After 3 hours in and out along the shore, our students returned to SPHDS a little bit wiser in the field of marine science.
A special thanks to the parents who chaperoned - David LeVine, DeeAnn Hazani, and Yael Fultheim, and to our science teachers, Ms Nikolakopoulos and Mr. Kulka.

POTTY TRAINING TALK
Barbara Goldstein, our Director of Early Childhood Education, will be presenting a lecture on “Tips for Potty Training” on Tuesday evening, May 15th, on 7:30 p.m. in Room 3.  The lecture is open to SPHDS’ parents and the community.

GAN AVIV SUMMER CAMP
Back by popular demand!
After an absence of a number of years we are pleased to announce the return of our summer camp program for preschoolers and kindergartners.  Children who will be 3 years old by December 1st, 2007 through children entering Kindergarten this September will also be qualified.
There will be 2 two week sessions, the first from June 25th – July 6th and the second from July 9th – 20th.  Camp hours will be from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and extended day care will be available from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
It will be an action-packed, fun, summer camping experience with many activities planned.  Mr. Dave will be there with Hot Shot Sports; challah baking for Shabbat, water play, art activities, themed weeks and much, much more.
Going by past camp experiences, we know the children will have a “blast.”
Brochures and registration forms are available.
