Development at SPHDS
The Development Department at South Peninsula Hebrew Day School is responsible for the Annual Fund, the capital campaign ("Building for the Future"), the planned giving program, honor fund gifts, special events, car donations, alumni relations, grants, and publications. We also work closely with the Parent Kesher (Parent/Teacher Organization) on the fundraisers for which the Parent Kesher takes responsibility. Current parents, alumni, grandparents, friends, former board members, parents of alumni, and foundations have provided support to SPHDS for many years. Those of us who have enjoyed the benefits that the school provides have an opportunity to continue to support SPHDS by giving to the school through one or more of its funds. All gifts to the school are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The SPHDS Annual Fund
The Annual Fund helps to bridge the 26% gap between the actual cost of an SPHDS education and tuition. Each fall parents, trustees, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, and friends are asked to make unrestricted operating gifts to help bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating each child. That gap is $1,600 per child. The money that is raised through the Annual Fund supports many important programs for SPHDS. This fund supports continuing education courses for faculty, innovative programming, financial assistance, and fine arts programs. All these services are intrinsic to our students' education; all are crucial to the sustained excellence of our school. We are striving for 100% participation, from parents, in the Annual Fund. With this kind of parent participation, the school has the opportunity to receive grants and other outside funding which might not otherwise be available.
Matching Gifts
Whether you give cash, securities or real property, many employers offer matching gift programs, which increase the value of your gift to SPHDS. Our Development Director can provide you with a partial list of participating companies, though we recommend you contact your employer directly to inquire if your company will match your gift and for the company matching gift guidelines.
Honor Funds Making an Honor Fund tribute gift is a wonderful way to honor a family member, friend, colleague or loved one while at the same time supporting SPHDS. Contributions may be made in any amount; often, they are made in increments of $18, a number signifying the Hebrew word meaning "life." Donations to tribute funds can mark a special occasion such as a wedding, a new baby, graduation, special achievement, or in memory of a loved one. Numerous tribute funds exist at SPHDS including the Unrestricted Fund, the Head of School's Discretionary Fund, the Library Fund, Gan Aviv Pre-school, Science Lab, and Playground Equipment. A tribute card will be sent to the person(s) the donor wishes to acknowledge, informing them of the donation.
Help SPHDS While You Shop!
You can support SPHDS at no cost to you by shopping with scrip or eScrip or SchoolPop. These programs are nationwide, so friends and grandparents in other parts of the country can help support your child's education at SPHDS! Your participation is key to the continuing success of our programs.
Other Donations
SPHDS is happy to accept car donations. The cars are sold at auction by a third party and the proceeds benefit the school. For more information, please see Nancy Kulka in the office.
